San Diego FAQ

Do you need a car in San Diego?

If you’re planning on checking out more than one neighborhood in San Diego, yes. Downtown and Coronado you can do without one if you stay central and use rideshare.

What’s the best time of year to visit San Diego?

September and October. The crowds thin out, the ocean is at its warmest, and the marine layer finally burns off by mid-morning. Spring is a close second. Summer is lovely but it’s the busiest and the most expensive.

What neighborhood should I stay in for a first visit?

Little Italy or Gaslamp if you want to walk to dinner without a car. La Jolla if a quieter, more scenic base matters more to you than walkability. My full neighborhoods guide breaks down all of them.

Is San Diego expensive to visit?

It’s not cheap, but it’s not Santa Barbara or Napa either. Hotels and parking are where the real cost adds up, not the food. My free things to do guide can offset a lot of it.
