Discovering Kenji Burger
When searching the web for "best food near me" in Kauai, Kenji Burger consistently appears in top reviews — and for good reason. This local favorite has earned its reputation through consistently exceptional food, fresh local ingredients, and that authentic Hawaiian flavor that makes Kauai dining so special.
Though my boyfriend and I discovered this hidden gem through a simple Google search, nothing could have prepared us for just how incredible it actually was.
Our Kenji Burger Experience: A Detailed Review
Kenji Burger operates three convenient locations across Kauai:
Lihue: The original location with cozy indoor seating
Kapaa: Larger space with outdoor seating options
Koloa: Another great spot for South Shore visitors
We visited the location in Lihue, which was only about twenty minutes from our Airbnb. The intimate space doesn't have many tables, but our late dinner timing meant no wait. The staff was prompt and welcoming, and they seemed happy to answer any questions we had.
Deciding it was best to stick to what they’re known for, my boyfriend and I each ordered the signature Kenji burger and split the furikake fries. It only took one bite for both of us to look up at each other with wide eyes. We were floored.

Let’s start with the burger. This isn't your average burger. It's next-level — juicy, flavorful, and layered with so many bold, delicious flavors that somehow worked perfectly together. Imagine this: 100% Kauai grass-fed beef, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, tomato, arugula, a sweet house-made teriyaki sauce, and a ponzu aioli that might just change your life. It was sweet, savory, tangy, creamy — all at once — and every single bite was a flavor bomb. Even the arugula added a fresh, peppery crunch that pulled it all together.
And then there were the furikake fries. Golden and crispy, these fries come coated in the same teriyaki and ponzu aioli that make the burgers so irresistible, then topped with furikake for that perfect umami punch. The balance of flavors and textures makes them impossible to put down.

One burger each and a shared order of fries was the perfect amount of food for us. But as we walked out that evening, we knew that just one trip to Kenji Burger wouldn’t be enough. We had to go back.
A few days later, after talking about the burger joint nonstop, we returned to try their Kapaa location. This spot features more seating and lovely outdoor dining options, but the food quality remained outstanding.
Surely two meals at Kenji Burger were enough for one week, right? Wrong. At the end of our trip, we made a last-ditch effort to try their third location in Koloa, only to arrive five minutes after closing time. Disappointing, yes, but we'll be sure to work it into our schedule on our next visit. (Travel tip: check their hours in advance — you’ll definitely want to plan around them.)
Final Thoughts: An Authentic Kauai Dining Experience
Our experience at Kenji Burger captures what I love most about traveling: discovering small, local gems that feel totally authentic to the place you’re visiting. The menu had such a fun Hawaiian twist, and the fact that they use 100% local Kauai beef made it feel even more rooted in the island. Everything tasted fresh, creative, and totally unique — truly that one-of-a-kind experience you’re looking for on vacation.
If you’re heading to Kauai and you love food that’s bold, flavorful, and a little unexpected, Kenji Burger is an absolute must. Don’t let the casual setup fool you — this place serves up some of the best food we had on the island. Whether you’re a burger connoisseur, a fry fanatic, or just someone looking for a meal you’ll be thinking about long after your trip ends, do yourself a favor and make Kenji Burger one of your first stops.
And maybe your second. And possibly your third.
