If you’re a fan of sweet treats but haven’t tried brown sugar milk tea yet, you need to. This rich, creamy drink has become an all-time favorite of mine, and for good reason. Brown sugar milk tea is made with fresh milk, black tea, brown sugar syrup, and optional tapioca pearls (note: this drink is different from brown sugar boba milk, which doesn’t contain any tea!). The sweetness of the brown sugar, paired with the creamy milk and light bitterness of the tea, creates a mouthwatering flavor profile. Plus, if you’re a boba fan, pairing the drink with pearls coated in sweet honey or brown sugar syrup makes this treat hard to resist.

Now, I have to confess a slight bias — I’m not a big fan of fruity drinks. I always opt for the creamier options. That’s why brown sugar milk tea has become my go-to at every boba shop I visit. Rarely do I stray from it. But that means I’ve tried countless different brown sugar milk teas, so I’ve gotten a little picky about where I go. Though I haven't visited every boba shop in San Diego, I’ve been to A LOT. Here are my top three picks for the best brown sugar milk tea in San Diego.

I discovered MeMe Tea on a shopping run, and it has quickly become my number one pick for brown sugar milk tea. The milk tea here is wonderfully rich and full of flavor, and the caramelized brown sugar syrup that coats the side of the cup adds depth and sweetness without overpowering the drink. The brown sugar boba (optional, but I highly recommend it) is some of the most flavorful I’ve had, which absolutely elevates the experience. Another huge plus: the texture and quality of the boba seems consistent across every visit – soft and chewy, but not overly so. This is something I think a lot of boba shops fall short on, so this is a big win for MeMe Tea.

I’ve been back plenty of times and always feel tempted to try a new drink (they feature so many tasty sounding options on their menu board!), but

Bei Yuan was my go-to boba shop when I was in college. It has free WiFi, tons of open tables, and a friendly atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to study for finals or get some work done. But most importantly, it has a great brown sugar milk tea! This one features a stronger black tea flavor, perfect for those who like to take their sweetness level down a notch. The boba (optional, of course) has a nice honey flavor that compliments the milk tea well and adds the perfect burst of sweetness. I will admit that their boba tends to be a little more firm than I prefer (it’s not at all hard, just not as chewy as I'd like) but I know some people favor this over the softer options!

Another positive about Bei Yuan: It’s open until 11pm, perfect for when you’re craving a drink late at

TeaTown is a fun hangout spot with a lot to offer. Though their brown sugar milk tea doesn’t quite measure up to the other boba spots on this list, it’s still a great option. TeaTown’s take on this drink closely resembles a classic milk tea, with just a splash of brown sugar added in. It doesn’t have as much of the rich brown sugar flavor that the other shops offer, and since I like my drinks SWEET, this version falls below MeMe Tea and Bei Yuan for me. But for people who prefer a milder brown sugar flavor, I'd recommend trying this one. If you choose to add boba to your drink, the pearls provide a light honey flavor, and they’re not overly chewy or hard. I’ve only been to this location a few times so I'm not sure how consistent the boba is, but it was good each time I visited!

There you have it! My favorite brown sugar milk teas in San Diego. Next time you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, be sure to check out these spots. Who knows, you might just discover a new favorite! And remember, if creamy drinks aren’t your thing, there are plenty of mouthwatering alternatives at each of these places.

Meanwhile, my search for the best brown sugar milk tea in San Diego continues. If anything new makes it onto the list, I'll be sure to give you all an update.

Here’s what really makes TeaTown stand out on this list: the adorable, animal-shaped cups the drinks are served in. Be sure to request one when you're putting your order in — it’s a small upcharge and it comes with slightly less than a normal cup does, but if you want an Insta-worthy pic or just a cute keepsake, it’s worth it at least once! TeaTown also has a variety of board games available for guests to play, making it a great place to relax and catch up with friends. They offer an impressive happy hour deal, too — from 7–10 p.m. on Monday–Thursday, get any drink for just $2.49 when you purchase a snack, such as their classic popcorn chicken, takoyaki, or potstickers.

Side note: I tried their Brown Sugar Oreo Smoothie recently, and it was incredible. I know this is an article on brown sugar milk tea so I'm not factoring it into my ratings, but I wouldn't be giving TeaTown justice if I didn't at least mention this smoothie. I'll definitely be going back for it soon.

Conclusion

so far, I haven’t been able to put down their brown sugar milk tea. It's simply too good to pass up.
